Snowman Scavenger Hunt

Snowman Scavenger Hunt

For this post, I'd like to highlight one of our Orientation and Mobility service providers, April Gasper. April has been working as a TVI since 1988 and in the O&M field since 2013. She is a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist through ACVREP and has been a service provider for Allied Instructional Services (AIS) for 5 years.

As a landmark reinforcement activity during the winter months, a snowman can be dissembled into his three parts: each a paper plate with appropriate accessories. One paper plate with top hat and face, another with buttons and arms, and the last with boots. These can be made with features that are tactual in nature or have bold, contrasting colors for the student with low vision.

These paper plates and accessories are attached to three landmarks in the student's school along with a clue about the next location. The clue or hint should be in the student's primary learning media (braille, large print, auditory hint, etc). If a student uses a low vision device such as a magnifier, practice in reading the clues can help the student work on this goal as well.

The student must use mental mapping and route planning as well as landmark discrimination to find all three pieces and reassemble them. More advanced skills include cue versus landmark determination, auditory versus smell landmarks, multiple-turn routes, etc. Students get to keep the snowman they've created.

Additional skills that could be included in this activity:
* concepts of big, medium-sized, little (snowman parts and button sizes).
* body concepts: hat on head, boots on feet, facial features
* weather concepts: what season is there typically snow and snowmen can be built
* low vision device use: read the clues with the student's magnifier
* have one student create the clues or directions for another student (giving/receiving directions).

Thank you April for this fun activity!

-Kristen
